Due to the importance of our country in international trade and maritime industry, Panama has two (2) specialized Maritime Courts, were international disputes are solved in a daily basis. Law No.8 of 1982, amended by Law No.11 of 1986, the maritime jurisdiction in our country, establishing high standard requirements for the maritime Judges to be appointed, in order to guarantee a specialized and up to date justice.
Since 1982, Panamanian Maritime Judges can acquire jurisdiction over international claims by arresting vessels in Panamanian jurisdictional waters, and given the fact that approximately 14,000 vessels yearly crosses the Panama Canal and other 7,000 calls Panamanian ports, Panama is a suitable jurisdiction for securing claims.
